MEXICO CITY -- Former presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has won a poll meant to choose the presidential candidate for Mexico's leftist Democratic Revolution Party.
Six thousand voters were polled, half by an agency picked by Marcelo Ebrard, the others by Lopez Obrador's choice.
The rivals vying for the party's nomination in 2012 both have said they will abide by the results.
Democratic Revolution is the first of three major parties to pick a candidate. The campaign officially begins in February.
Lopez Obrador lost the 2006 election by less than 1 percentage point.
Former Mexico State Gov. Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party is leading in all polls ahead of the July presidential vote.
