JOSE DE LA ISLA: Youths keep eye on Mexican election fraud » Standard-Times:

MEXICO CITY — You are most likely to see Jose Ortiz, 58, at the corner of Francisco Madero Street and Juarez Avenue in this city's Historical District. He impersonates one of Mexico's founders, Father Miguel Hidalgo.

Ortiz is among the come-to-life characters — including Laurel and Hardy, Edward Scissorhands and Neytiri from "Avatar" — posing for snapshots with visitors. He's tall and lean, with a fringe of long, stringy white hair on his otherwise bald head.

Ortiz portrays the priest who led Mexico's independence movement in 1810. He dresses in a black frock coat with a priestly high stiff collar, a red sash around the waist. He carries a standard of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who in this political context is like Lady Liberty to the French.

He was in character on Election Day Sunday not on his usual corner but at the Tasquena subway station. He was among about 30 angry people shouting that they were not allowed to vote.
