Chicago’s MORENA (Movimiento de
Regeneración Nacional) committee invites all media to a press
conference this Friday,
October 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Casa Aztlán, 1831 S. Racine, to announce
details of the
visit by MORENA’s leader: Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, scheduled for this
Sunday, October 9.
On October 2, Mr. López Obrador formally
established MORENA in Mexico City, as an organizing mechanism for the
upcoming 2012
Mexican presidential elections. But, MORENA’s aims go far beyond next year’s
elections.
This Sunday, October 9, Mr. López
Obrador will speak to his compatriots living in Chicago in an
informational assembly
at Benito Juarez High School, 1510 W. Cermak, at 3:00 p.m.
Mr. López Obrador, leader of MORENA,
was a candidate in the 2006 Mexican presidential elections. Although the
results of the election tipped against his favor, there was enough evidence
pointing to fraud. After several acts of resistance, Mr. López Obrador
established
himself as the legitimate president of Mexico, and in that capacity he has
traveled across that country these past 5 years holding town hall style
assemblies. His efforts have culminated in the formation of MORENA.
Mr. López Obrador is one of the
presidential pre-candidates for the progressive elements in Mexico in next
year’s election. A candidate will be chosen, possibly at the beginning of
December.
Mr. López Obrador has outlined a plan
called Proyecto Alternativo de Nación, a 50-point plan that aims at a
transformation of Mexico, and that seeks to shift power from the group that has
held it so many years and has drowned Mexico in violence, poverty, illiteracy,
and lack of opportunities.
The lack of opportunities has pushed many
Mexicans to the United States seeking jobs. Unfortunately, this country has
responded by deporting 1 million people during the current Obama
administration.
Mexicans living in the exterior have
the right to vote and also influence their families at home. Their remittances
continue to be a driving force of the economy, second only to petroleum.
